My Family’s Story: Kiss the Salt Goodbye!

By Michelle Beadle Holder

Many spices sold at markets today have salt as the first or second ingredient, which can add flavor.  However, for those of us who have high blood pressure or a family history of high blood pressure, the high sodium content of salt can shave years from our life and the lives of our loved ones.  But that does not have to be the case.

Kiss the Salt Goodbye

In 1997, my mother was prescribed medication for high blood pressure.  Determined to save her life and prevent the disease from affecting her family, my mom took drastic action.  She cut salt from her diet cold turkey!  She also created a SALT-FREE kitchen.

Our family’s taste buds went into shock! My sister recalled this period as the time, “she (mom) told us all to Kiss the Salt Goodbye.”

In the moment, our mom’s SALT-FREE kitchen and meals felt like traumatic experiences.  The delicious Jamaican foods we were all accustomed to went from soul-filling and heart-warming island goodness to being gloomy, boring, bland, flat experiences.  Dishes like rice and peas, Ackee and salt fish, oxtail, curry chicken, and curry goat lacked the bright flavor without salt.

Announcing Our Salt-Free Jerk Seasoning

After years of learning and experimenting in our kitchens, my mom and I co-created a SALT-FREE, LOW-SODIUM blend of spices.  Now we have the spices we need to stay healthy without losing our culture.  And you can, too!

Our new homemade Jerk Seasoning is a special blend of SALT-FREE herbs and spices. This spice enhances the flavors of any dish—vegetables, poultry, fish, meats, and much more without all the SALT.

Have a dish you want to spice up? Add our Jerk Seasoning special blend. You’ll get a taste of delicious Jamaican ire vibes and quality of life for you and your entire family.

Our Jerk Seasoning comes in mild and spicy flavors.
